On May 19, 2018, the Academician XieXincheng, deputy director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and professor of Peking University, made an academic report entitled “Spin Superconductivity” at the Enlightenment Forum in the lecture hall of the Science Museum. Academician Xie was invited by the School of Physical Science and Technology and the Cuiying Honors College to make his report. The report was chaired by Professor Luo Honggang, Dean of the School of Physical Science and Technology.
Academician Xie first introduced the fundamental properties of superconductors - zero resistance effect and Meissner effect – by demonstrating the basic concepts and physical images of superconductivity. Academician Xie also explained some necessary theoretical frameworks of superconductivity, including the BCS theory, the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and London equations. He emphasized that electron pairing and quantum coherence are the two basic conditions in forming the microscopic mechanisms of superconducting phenomena. He went on to introduce the Josephson effect and the flux-quantization effect, important phenomena of superconductivity. Academician Xie also added some basic theories of spin superconductivity and significant experimental findings in recent years, as well as relevant research prospects in this sphere. Academician Xie’s inspiring and profound report greatly enlightened the scholars and students of Lanzhou University.
In the Q&A session after the report, Academician Xie meticulously answered the questions raised by audience.
About the Enlightenment Forum
The Enlightenment Forum serves the purpose of promoting the scientific spirit, encouraging scientific research and innovation, and improving academic exchanges between the School of Physical Science and Technology and well-known scientists. It also aims to promote the development of the School of Physical Science and. Invited speakers at the forum include academicians from various fields of physics and relevant disciplines. They will introduce the frontier dynamics of relevant fields and share valuable experience in scientific research to encourage academic exchanges and communications among young scholars and students.
